Taking books home over Easter?

As you know, we usually renew your books for you automatically if they haven't been requested. However, over the Easter holidays things work a little differently.

Renewals
  • Even though we will try to automatically renew your loans by Saturday 12 March, we may encounter some issues, such as another student requesting your book. Because of this, we’re asking you to please remember to check your library account through StarPlus, and renew any items due for return before going off home for the holidays.
  • Once your book has been renewed, you’ll be able to keep it over the holidays and - as long as no one else requests it - we’ll continue to renew it for you once term starts. If someone does make a request for a book that you have on loan, you will need to bring it back to us by Monday 11 April.
Requests
  • If you’ve made any requests for books that you no longer need over Easter, please remember to cancel them online.
  • So that we can get your requested books to you even faster, if anyone has a book that’s overdue they won’t be able to place a request.
Read online
  • If we don’t have a physical copy of the book you need, don’t worry, we also have a wide selection of e-books and other online resources available through StarPlus. Just log in to MUSE and read our ebooks from your desktop, wherever you are, 24/7.

If you encounter any difficulties, please contact the Library on 0114 222 7200 or email library@sheffield.ac.uk

Renew your books for Christmas

As you know, we usually renew your books for you automatically. But over the Christmas holidays things are a bit different.

Renewals

  • We will try to automatically renew your loans on 12 December, but just in case there's any problems, such as another student requesting your book, please remember to check your library account through StarPlus, and renew any items due for return before going home for the holiday period.
  • Once the book has been renewed, you’ll be able to keep it over the vacation period, and as long as no-one else requests it, we will continue to renew it for you once term starts.
  • However, if someone does make a request for a book that you have on loan, we won’t be able to renew it after the vacation and you will need to bring it back to us by 18 January.

  Requests

  • If we don’t have a physical copy of the book you need, remember to check StarPlus to see if we have it as an e-book.
  • If you have made any requests for books that you no longer need over Christmas, please remember to cancel them online.
  • If you need any more information about borrowing items from the University library, please contact library@sheffield.ac.uk

Returning students - Library changes

Welcome back! We’ve been working hard over the summer to improve our services and make them even easier to use:

  • There’s no separate Library PIN to remember – the University & Library PIN are now combined into a single PIN. To get your PIN go to www.sheffield.ac.uk.cics/password, login with your University username & password and choose option 6 to have your PIN emailed to you.
  • We’ve introduced unlimited automatic renewals of loans - so there’ll be no fines to pay unless the book has been requested by someone else.
  • You’ll receive a weekly borrowing statement by email which will list what you have out on loan. If we’ve had to  revise the date of return because someone else has requested one of your books we’ll let you know, so check your emails carefully.
  • If the book you want is on loan, you need to request it online and we’ll email you when it’s ready to collect. Select the IC as your collection site for 24/7 self-service collection.
  • Remember to sign in to StarPlus by clicking the University Members link at the top right of the page. When you search for a book in the library it will now display the loan period which applies to you (staff & student loan periods are different).
  • In the latest version of StarPlus, click the View it tab to link to online resources and the Get it tab to see locations of print copies.
  • We’ve updated our StarPlus tutorial to reflect the latest changes.
