Remember to request books

Books that are out on loan are automatically renewed unless requested by another customer. Use the following instructions to place a request:

  1. Check that you are logged in to StarPlus by looking for your name in the top right corner of the screen. If your name is not displayed then click on the University members link. There is a separate link for external Library customers.

  1. Enter keywords and/or the author name into the University Collections tab to locate the record of the book that you would like to request.

  1. Click on the Get It tab.  From here you will see the item details, which includes the location and availability.

  1. If the book that you require is out on loan, click on the blue Request link. On the following screen you will need to select the Pickup Location – this is the Library that you will collect the book from.

  1. Click the orange Request button.

To view your active requests click on the myLibrary Account link at the top of the screen. Select Requests from the box on the left.  You can also cancel your requests from here. Welcome to new students

Welcome to the University of Sheffield!  We hope you will enjoy your time here and hope to meet some of you at induction sessions arranged by your department.

To get you started on finding resources for your studies, check our Introduction to library & computing services web pages or pick up our QuickStart Guide from any library site. Our web pages contain links to our subject guides and a suite of information skills tutorials, together with one-minute videos on a range of topics. Check our one-minute video on how to borrow a book.

You’ll need your UCard and PIN to borrow books using our self-service machines. If you forget your PIN or want to change it go to https://www.shef.ac.uk/cics/password sign in, and follow the instructions.

When you borrow a book we’ll renew it for you automatically unless someone else wants it. We’ll send you a weekly borrowing statement by email, so check this carefully to make sure your books aren’t wanted back. That way you’ll never have to pay any fines!

Remember we’re here to help you, so come and speak to us. Our library HelpDesk can answer your email or telephone enquiries. Just email library@sheffield.ac.uk or telephone 0114 222 7200. You can also get specific subject help from your subject librarian.

Automatic renewals

We've made some changes to the library system to make it easier for you to keep your account up to date.

From now on, we will automatically renew your loans as long as no-one has requested them.
If one of your loans has been requested and we are unable to renew it, we will send you an email to let you know that you need to return it.
We will also send you a weekly borrowing statement to remind you which books you have out on loan and highlight any that have been requested.
Make sure you check your weekly borrowing statement and library account regularly to avoid fines.
For more information on entitlements and loan periods, see our Guide to Lending Services
