Changes to default search options in Web of Science

From 15th July 2016, Web of Science will default to the WoS Core Collections search option, rather than All Databases.  

The WoS Core Collection search offers more advanced options (such as the Analyze Results feature), however Core Collection search results will not include content from some key databases such as MedLine, Biosis or Zoological Record. 

  

Users accessing Web of Science via StarPlus will still automatically default to the All Databases search as before. 

Users accessing Web of Science directly may need to select the All Databases option from the search menu.

You can also select your preferred search options by signing up for a personal account and going to the Settings menu (you must access Web of Science via StarPlus to do this if you are off-campus):

Web of Science Usage Counts

Web of Science is a multidisciplinary database. It fully covers records from over 12,000 highly acclaimed impact journals in the sciences, social sciences, and arts & humanities, as well as books, book series, reports and conferences. Usage statistics are now available to University of Sheffield users for items in Web of Science, offering a new tool to help identify popular or hot-topic papers.

 

 

Usage counts indicate:

• The number of times a full text article has been accessed
• The number of times the record has been exported to Endnote or other reference managers vis RIS

This can complement the citation counts already available in Web of Science. Citations can take years to build up, so usage is a good way to indicate interest in a research publication, especially for recently published papers which have yet to be cited.

 

You can view total usage since 2013, or over the last 180 days.  There is also the option to sort search results by usage, to display the most-used papers first.

 

 

Usage stats are updated daily (so you won't see a 'live' update of any clicks you make whilst using Web of Science).

In order to guard against gaming or systematic downloads, Web of Science will only record 3 actions per item per session.

Online training for Web of Science

Web of Knowledge has changed.  Thompson Reuters have upgraded the database to provide a more intuitive, streamlined search experience.  They have also changed the name from Web of Knowledge to Web of Science.
