Sustainable Organization Library

 

The Sustainable Organization Library (SOL), published by GSE Research, is a dedicated online collection of individually searchable chapters, articles, reports and case studies featuring leading thinkers in sustainability and social responsibility. SOL covers sustainability in its broadest sense, addressing the social, environmental and economic aspects.

SOL crosses over all sectors of business education, especially green management programs which promote ethical business and socially responsible leadership. It features collections from organisations such as Greenleaf Publishing, Oxfam,  UN Global Compact, ILO, Do Sustainability and The Geneva Association.

Access SOL to start searching, or you can also search for individual titles on StarPlus.

New! Financial Times (FT.com)

The Library now subscribes to the Financial Times (FT.com) - the online edition of the British daily newspaper with a special emphasis on business and economic news internationally. FT.com will enable you to access a wide range of news articles and information on: companies, markets, the global economy, business and finance, management, and more.

As well as the online edition of the newspaper, you can also view the Financial Times ePaper, which is an exact digital replica of the printed newspaper.  The ePaper is available from 6am London time and can be read on your computer or downloaded. It is also available as a web app, optimised for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Furthermore, the Financial Times have created a searchable ePaper archive.

Useful tip: Take a look at the Tools drop-down menu located on the right side of the screen. From here you can: access ePapers; create “clipping lists” of articles that you want to go back to; set up alerts; access the currency converter; search or browse for executive jobs; look up definitions using the FT Lexicon; and access other tools.

Access

Access is available directly from here by connecting to the Financial Times website (see Quick links on the right). You'll be prompted to log in to MUSE as necessary.

You'll need to register for a personal account using your University email address the first time that you access FT.com. Further information is available here.

You can use your personal FT.com login details for anywhere, anytime access. This means you can access FT.com directly from your mobile device. Your account will need to be verified every 90 days by connecting to the FT website using the link on this page.

Spotlight on Business Source Premier

Business Source Premier is a new resource for global business literature and data, such as country and industry reports. It also provides company profiles, which will be useful for any student preparing for job applications or interviews.

The database has text to speech functionality (in English) for documents in html format. The search interface can be translated into a number of different languages, and articles in html format can also be translated.
If you create a personalised account within the database, you can organise your search results in folders and add notes to documents that you save. You can also save searches, create alerts and RSS feeds.
Apps for iPhone and Android devices are available.This database will be of interest to students and researchers in a range of disciplines across the University. To get access, open StarPlus from the library tab in MUSE and click the Log in link in the top right corner. Type Business Source Premier into the University Collections search box.

Researching the Olympics?

If you're interested in London 2012 or previous Olympics, have a look at the Leisure Tourism database. It includes extensive information from the leisure, recreation, sport, hospitality, tourism and culture sectors, including new academic research, industry reports and links external sources with additional information.
Recent content includes articles on the impact of the Games on participation in sport from Sport England and a report from Lloyds on the potential impact on GDP.
You can access the database easily from our new catalogue StarPlus by typing leisure tourism database into the University Collections search box and clicking 'View Online'. StarPlus is available via the Library tab in MUSE.

Keynote reports trial

We have a trial to Keynote market research reports. There are thousands of reports covering every major industry, with a specific range of reports focusing on European markets.

The trial is running until 30 April 2011 and is open to all registered staff and students of the University.  Please note that because we have access as part of a trial, the information on this site should be used as reference only. As they monitor usage, Keynote have indicated that users are allowed to download a maximum of 10% of any report.

OECD iLibrary trial

We have another new trial running. This one is  to the OECD iLibrary which is available to registered staff and students of the University of Sheffield until December 2009. Although it's a preliminary version and not yet fully complete nor functional, do take a look and let us have your feedback. There is a Guided Tour of the OECD iLIbrary to help you.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is one of the world's largest sources of comparable statistics, and economic and social data. As well as collecting data, OECD monitors trends, analyses and forecasts economic developments and researches social changes or evolving patterns in trade, environment, agriculture, technology, taxation and more. This trial provides access to all their books, statistics and journals.

Many OECD publications are also freely available online. They can be found either from the OECD website,  via a 'Contains' search on Find it, or from the ESDS International database in MUSE.
